Here’s my submission for @whatpumpkin‘s comic contest!
I wanted to combine Homestuck and Hiveswap a little bit with this one. This panel (#4524) sort of started the ball rolling and I was thinking about babysitter Roxy’s backstory and I read a bunch of zodiac constellation myths on wikipedia and things got a little intense? So enjoy I guess.
It’s almost 3 am. I don’t have much to say for myself. I’ve sacrificed a lot of sleep for this thing so I figure I should post it.
joey decides that she can’t trust her dad the day he brings jude home from the hospital. he said mommy and i are going to the hospital, and when we come back it’ll be the three of us plus a baby! and joey was genuinely excited for this new development. she got to stay home with her cool babysitter, who was thirteen and ordered pizza and let her watch the dark crystal. halfway through the movie, the phone rang and her babysitter answered it while joey picked the pepperoni off of her slice and stole some of the olives off of roxy’s. her mom always said that vegetables would make her grow strong, after all.
when her babysitter came back into the room, her eyes were red and she hugged joey for a long time before resuming the movie. they didn’t really talk that night, and the next day, her dad came back with baby jude, but not her mom.
trying to understand concepts like “your mother died in childbirth due to a freak aneurysm and the doctor had to cut her open in order to retrieve your brother” was kind of difficult at four years old. and because she was still a small child with limited rationale and extreme amounts of trauma, joey decided that the real reason her mother wasn’t coming back was because her father was a lying piece of shit.
ty!!! i think they would be good moms! i really think roxy would be very pumped to have a kid and jane would be as well, and callie might be nervous at first but like. ofc their child decides that Snake Bird Skull Mom is the BEST
this is kind of really rambley BUT:no, momlonde was a bad parent not because she didn’t know how to parent, but because of the combined driving forces of alcoholism/depression & history of trauma (thanks, @mmmmalo!). if anything she was neglectful at worst–i don’t think she was physically/verbally/emotionally abusive, at least in a traditional sense? like the emotional abuse rose went through was more of like…a horrible side effect of her own mother’s slow self destruction rather than her mother telling her that she was worthless or something to that degree
HOWEVER. having a good parent, or even a good EXAMPLE of a parent, doesn’t ensure that you yourself will be a good parent! roxy and calliope grew up in extremely dire circumstances, and calliope is from a species so weird and cryptic that she believed that she couldn’t love due to misinformation (spoiler: calliope can love! she’s beautiful and overcame so much to get where she is in comic). idk i’m rambling but yeah. wellllllll within the context of the MVW AU, it’s important to note that the kids & trolls & sprites upon reaching earth C didn’t just skip 5000 years in the future automatically and instead chose to spend like, the equivalent of five years jumping through time and working as positive historical influences in their universe.
so like. casey went from “young child” to “snarky teen” in salamander years during this time. she was still following john around but she had become more aware of her own upbringing and how fucked it was, especially in regards to 1) literally being kidnapped by a thirteen year old human due to his CONAIR fantasy/psychotic episode and 2) how she was then made an acolyte of death & a necromancer by yet another thirteen year old with mental health issues. and still, she wasn’t respected like the humans and trolls! she was just a consort, just a Game Construct after all.
except…she wasn’t. she still was a person with feelings & desires & genuine emotional distress. being infantilized for so many years definitely had taken a toll, so in what was the earth c equivalent of the greek & roman cultural and scientific renaissances, she pretty much lost her shit at everyone. john and rose in particular. and then ran off and got a private island with several other consorts as well as carapaces, which quickly became known for the sociological studies and philosophy as well as the fact that everyone there was a lesbian.
