So I just finished Beach City Drift and I just… I really, really like the moral of the episode here. They both know that Kevin is, as Steven even said, a creep. They both feel that does deserve to lose. Hell, I agree, Kevin deserves to lose at his game.
But here, Kevin’s game isn’t racing. It’s the game that Steven and Connie lost the moment they fused.
The two of them, and in what feels in a very out of character manner for Steven, go out for vengeance against Kevin for doing the things he’s done. Steven’s not the kind of kid to go out for blood, yet he still was so passionately compelled to fight Kevin against all better judgement. It wasn’t a logical choice to race him to win, it was an impulsive one. They still made that choice to play his game, even though they loathed it.
People act irrationally. People aren’t the masters of their own wills, but they feel they are.
Honestly… I don’t think I can do the episode service when it’s nearly midnight. This… This episode has reminded me just how much this show deserves to be analyzed.
I really like how it was CONNIE who gave Steven the nudge he needed to realize what was really happening here.
Connie, who could barely string three sentences together to another person at the very beginning of the series.
Connie, who very obviously lives with social anxiety.
Connie, who, out of all of them, should have been the most protective and angered by all of this, as a knight-to-be.
But she wasn’t.
Because she lived in this sort of thing every day.
Connie’s trips into Steven’s life are fleeting things. She spends the majority of her time dealing with regular humans and their regular human attitudes.
I love that Steven and Connie relearned the lesson from Alone Together in this episode!
“You are not one person. You are not two people. You are an experience. Make sure you’re a good experience.”

okay so i think i know why steven was super fuckin pissed in this episode.
normally when facing a foe, steven never jumps to anger. he always tries to take the most peaceful route. he’s always tried to be a forgiving pacifist. but with all his past enemies, he’s only known how they had hurt him. of course he knew that they had hurt others, but he didn’t know how the other victims were affected by that pain, or to what degree. but with kevin, steven knew his own pain, as well as connie’s. as stevonnie, they share the exact same feelings, and the exact same experiences. when kevin harassed them at the dance, steven experienced an anxiety attack for what might have been the first time. it stressed them out so badly that they unfused. so he knew how badly it had hurt connie, because he experienced that hurt with her.
steven wasn’t mad at kevin because kevin hurt him, but because he hurt him and connie. and steven felt how it hurt her. it was something new and foreign to him. that’s part of what makes fusion so intimate. you experience the exact same things as your partner, whether they be good or bad. and you understand each other better because of it. and steven understood the effect kevin’s harassment had on connie.
Before Steven was born Amethyst used to say ‘fuck’ all the time & so when he was a baby Greg had to sit her down and explain that she has to stop swearing around Steven because he’s young & impressionable
So Amethyst is like “but that’s my favourite word, when will be stop being young & impressionable so I can say it again??”
And Greg is like “uhh I don’t know, 15 I guess? 15 is probably old enough”
“Got it”
flash forward to Steven’s fifteenth birthday and he is woken at dawn by Amethyst yelling “wake the FUCK up Steven it’s FUCKING TIME”
& he spends the entire day losing his mind

Garnet: *deadpan* Amethyst just got her favourite word back
Amethyst: *running around the house* FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
