discord asked for a platonic shindeku moment so uhh. hopefully y’all fools like this rapidly churned out snippet too
“Hey,” Shinsou says from Izuku’s open doorway. “You busy?”
Technically, Izuku is. But math’s boring anyway— he snaps his textbook closed, dropping his pencil in favor of turning to Shinsou and shooting him an inquisitive glance. “Not really— what’s up?”
Shinsou shrugs from where he’s slumped against Izuku’s doorframe. With his legs crossed in front of him and his hands tucked into his pockets, Shinsou paints a deliberately careless picture; anyone else from their class might’ve fallen for it.
Izuku knows better by now. Shinsou’s shoulders are hiked up by a fraction of an inch— tension lines them like a well-worn blanket. He won’t quite meet Izuku’s eyes.
Sticky concern thrums to life in the pit of Izuku’s stomach. “What’s going on?”
Shinsou’s brows dip the way they usually do when Shinsou’s confronting an unexpected problem. “Uh, I— okay, look. I need a favor.”
“A favor,” Izuku echoes. He drags his chair back, ignoring the thin screech of wood on wood. “You didn’t set the microwave on fire or something, did you? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” Shinsou throws his hands up at Izuku’s disbelieving look. “No, really— this isn’t even about me, alright, just—” a pause. “Can…” He peers around the hall, something bright and suspicious gleaming in his eyes. “Do you mind if I close the door for a sec?”
Izuku nods wordlessly, and Shinsou shuts the door. The rigid line of his shoulders relax as soon as it clicks shut.
“I need your help getting something,” Shinsou says, all in a rush.
Izuku blinks. “Okay? What— what is it?”
Something personal— it must be, from the way Shinsou’s edging around it so carefully. But what?
Shinsou takes a deep breath. “It’s kinda against the rules,” he admits. “Um. Fuck, okay— it’s cats.”
Cats. That’s it. Relief blooms in Izuku’s chest—
Wait.
“Cats?”
“Three of them.” Shinsou runs a hand through the tangles in his hair. “Uh, kittens, actually? Look, I was on my way back from a walk and they were just— sitting there. In a box. And it’s cold, okay—”
Izuku can see exactly where he’s going with this. “You want me to help you smuggle cats into the dorms.”
“Well when you put it like that—”
“Cats. In the dorms. With Aizawa-sensei.”
“Don’t say it so loud!” Shinsou hisses. “I won’t keep them for long— just for tonight, and then we can see about taking them to a shelter. Midoriya—”
“You want me,” Izuku says, “to sneak out with you,” a quick glance out the window, “past curfew, find a box full of kittens that might not even be there anymore, sneak back in with them, and then find a shelter to leave them at in the morning?”
Shinsou’s jaw clamps shut. He nods, quick and jerky, once.
Izuku’s mouth stretches into a wide smile. “Okay. So how do you wanna do this?”
What I mean: Shinsou Hitoshi gives us all a glimpse as to how fucked up the My Hero Academia world and society are. They label you a hero or villain or other from birth based on your Quirk. He has been ridiculed, outcast, excluded, ignored, and just plain old shunned for something that he can’t help. And to be honest, his Quirk is amazing and probably one of the best a hero could ever hope for. It can change up the whole hero and villain industry and make villains take a real good long look at themselves. Not to mention, his Quirk can be a life saver in so many other occupations: policeman, detective, lawyer, teacher, security guard, but you know what? He doesn’t want to be any of those. Hitoshi wants to be a hero because “You can’t help for what you long for”, because he wants to help people. Does it matter that the world practically wrote him off as a villain before he could prove them wrong? No, because Hitoshi wants to be a hero not for the fame, glory, money, power, not any family reasons (at least, not that we know of cause we’re even not sure of his family situation at the moment). He wants to be a hero because he wants to save others and to prove the world wrong, that it doesn’t matter what Quirk someone is born with: it only matters what they choose to do with it.
6.5 mile run I just watched the new BNHA episode subbed then dubbed back to back because i crave that mineral that new BNHA content conclusions are as follows:
the music they play while Deku is possessed is really really creepy give the composer a raise
knowing Ojiro warned Deku AHEAD OF TIME that answering Shinso is what activates the quirk makes it 18 times funnier because it’s literally: Ojiro: “Dont answer him.” Deku: “Got it.” Shinso: “Ojiro sucks.” Deku: “whAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST FUCKING SAY”
Aizawa holding thin, individual sheets of paper in his completely bandaged ovenmitt mutton fists continues to be hilarious im so sorry aizawa
the diversity of quirks is also hilarious because you might have the wrath of two elemental gods facing off in the ring or you might, in this case, have two prepubescent boys slapping each other
seriously since Deku cant use his quirk and he broke outta Shinso’s this match is literally the equivalent of sitting in the lunchroom sipping your juice box while two beanpole freshman boys pick a fight on chocolate milk day
reminder that Mama Midoriya just watched her son get decked in the face, broadcast to millions around the world
Deku, pile-driving Shinso into the ground, “bad. stay there.”
Izuku “was literally warned about Shinso’s quirk ahead of time” Midoriya fell for it three times hes just too Anime Protagonist™ to stop answering Shinso’s declarations are we sure this boy’s cut out to be a hero
Present Mic needs to stop dragging everyone Sero did nothing wrong
Actually new rule just leave Sero alone everyone he did nothing wrong
Speaking of wrath of the elemental gods, “You can’t tell me what to do Dad” *summons the next ice age*
For real im glad Todoroki is quiet and tired and awkward because if you gave him Bakugou’s personality i think the world woulda frozen over by now
dub specific shout outs
Present Mic using the phrase “Could this be a quirk at work~~~?” when Deku just fucking froze
Iida’s “Classic Midoriya maneuver”
All Might’s “Spooky!!! I’m a ghost?!” save this nerd
“Shut your face, Sparky.”
No seriously Shinso and Sero mighta lost those fights but no one got quite as destroyed as Kaminari
I mean it there are two shots when we see the audience set up, once before and once after “Shut your face Sparky” and Kaminari completely moves seats away from Bakugou I think he might have even left pray for him
So I have many feels about episode 20 of Boku no Hero, but one of the
things I would like to talk about here, is the relationship between
Shinso and Aizawa.
We see that Shinso has made it to the duel phase of the Special Olympics. And while his easily excitable friend is
shouting about how weird it is that Shinso made it this far, Aizawa
is basically sitting there going “I TOLD you guys.” To Aizawa, the
entrance exam was bullshit, because it gave a huge advantage to
people with physical quirks. And Aizawa, of all people, should know
this. I mean. A young Aizawa wouldn’t have made it through that
entrance exam.
Aizawa is a hero through and through. He has the heart of one. This man pitted himself against an overwhelming amount of
villains, knowing he probably wasn’t going to make it. He literally put his own body between
a coordinated surprise attack and his students in the hopes of giving them time to
flee. And he would not have been able to enter UA if he was their age. His
quirk is to shut off other quirks. It wouldn’t have worked against the robots of that year’s
exam.
Part of what makes the hero business harder for Aizawa than for, say, Endeavour or All Might is that Aizawa’s quirk is very specialised, and there’s nothing physical about it. He basically had to make up a new martial art using the power of
scarves in order to also have a physical component. There’s a
reason that Aizawa is always telling his students not to be a
one trick pony and that’s because he had to learn not to be one in
order to even qualify as a decent hero. And he knows not everyone has to struggle that hard. When
you have a powerful physical quirk, it’s easy to believe that it will
be enough.
So it’s not difficult to imagine that Aizawa recognizes a younger version of himself in Shinso. This is a kid with a Super Powerful quirk, who has some serious trouble finding the right little slot to fit in at UA. Because that school is not adapted to accommodate his strengths and overcome his specific weaknesses.
There’s a panel in the later chapters
where Aizawa is talking to Shinsho and you kinda feel like they could bond. These two have a lot in
common, after all. They both have some sleep schedule issues, judging by the bags under their eyes, they
both like cats and they share a common perspective on the world of
quirks. We don’t really know Aizawa’s background (yet), but it
wouldn’t surprise me if he really, truly gets what drives
Shinso. And honestly, I hope he starts mentoring him. Because Shinso deservers better.
SHINSO!! MY BITCH!! MY BOY!! MY LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ya’ll have no idea how much I’m looking forward to ch 195 now, if they invited shinso to duke it out with the kids who have actually been getting all that hero directed training and experience can you IMAGINE what he must be able to do
Here’s the cover for the first ever zine I hosted, the @shindeku-zine ! This project had a whole lot of ups and downs, and has been an amazing learning experience I’m so happy I got to be apart of!
