Why do people have such a hard time naming their Naruto OCs? Like Kishi literally just picks something that “sounds good as a name.” He doesn’t even use real Japanese names. He just picks random nouns and names his characters after them.
“Kiba” means “fang”. Whoa good job.
“Kurenai” means “lipstick”. She wears lipstick. Congrats.
“Temari” is a Japanese hand-ball game.
“Ino” literally means “boar”. Why would you name your little girl that?
“Kisame” means “shark demon”. Wow, Kisame’s parents were horrible people.
“Sasori” means “scorpion”. That was clever of him.
“Orochimaru” literally means “snake child”. I wonder how much time he spent coming up with that one…
“Shikamaru” is “deer child”.
“Itachi” means “weasel”. What a great idea to name your son that.
“Madara” can mean “spots/speckles” My dad always makes fun of this one because it reminds him of “Madera”, which means “wood” in Spanish. I don’t know why he thinks that’s so funny. Another meaning for Madara is a certain kind of codfish.
Ok, these are literally just nouns that are used in everyday Japanese. It’s like if you named your kid “Hashi” or something. Hashi means “bridge” and “chopsticks”. Talk about confusing.
“Man, I love hashi.”
“You talking about your son, or a bridge or what?”
Kishi deliberately uses common nouns, all you have to do is go on a Japanese dictionary and type in something that has to do with your OC, and you can find something.
For example, I picked “Hisame”, which sounds awesome. It means “hail; chilly rain”. Or how about “Oroshi”, meaning “Wind blowing down from mountains”? It takes like two seconds- you don’t have to waste time picking a legit name for your character. Actually, it’s more true to the show if you don’t. There are some characters with traditional Japanese names, such as Sasuke, but not many.
All of these don’t necessarily mean what I have written here, however, if you said the names out loud, they could be interpreted as these translations. Some other Naruto Name meanings for you guys:

Darui: Sluggish/dull/listless <- OMG
Kakashi: Scarecrow
Iruka: Dolphin
Naruto: The swirly cake in the ramen

Uchiha: Japanese fan
Akatsuki: ”Dawn” if written as 暁, or ironically can mean “red moon” if written as 赤月
Suigetsu: Water and moon
Tenten: Moving from place to place/ here and there/ rolling about
Shino: Japanese bamboo
Hinata: Sunny place, in the sun
Hanabi: Fireworks
Konahamaru: Foliage/ leaves of trees + child
Sakura: Japanese cherry blossom
Neji: Screw/ key/spring of a clock or watch
Yamato: Japanese province
Hebi: Snake
Taka: Hawk
Yamanaka: In the mountains
Hidan: Bandit gang, being shot/bombed (I know for a fact that his name uses different kanji, but the pronunciation is the same and that’s what counts)
Hoshigaki: Dried persimmons
Anko: Red bean paste
Kabuto: Helmet
P.S. “maru” at the end of a name simply means “circle” and is a suffix for boys. But don’t just tack this on to your oc name. There are rules, and if you don’t know Japanese, it’s best to stay away from just randomly smashing words together.

Okay I’m sorry but I’m rewatching the chunin exams arc and with how overdramatic and fake edgy Gaara is there is NO WAY his siblings don’t mock him for it as petty revenge the second he stops being a psychopath. Baki asks him where he’s going and his completely straight faced response is “to remind myself I’m alive” like okay ebony darkness dementia ravenway, it’s all fun and games now, but it’s not gonna be so edgy when your older brother uses this line to clown you every time he leaves a room for the next 2 and a half years.
the only valid naruto meta is the single use clothing sasuke theory my flatmates came up with after a drunken binge of the chuunin exams
“Single Use Clothing Sasuke” is a complex, multi-layered theory borne of the complex, multi-layered minds of my flatmates. It essentially boils down to the idea that Every Single Thing sasuke wears from the day of the uchiha massacre to the day he leaves the village are entirely different yet identical versions of the same two outfits. He only wears them once and then throws them out.
The idea behind this is based on the implications that a) sasuke lives alone in the uchiha compound which is intended to be lived in by hundreds of people, b) he was not cared or provided for in any way by the village adults after the massacre, and c) there are entire city blocks of empty uchiha houses full of free shit just sitting there, ESPECIALLY clothing.
Theory is as follows: sasuke, clearly unable to do his own laundry because he’s 12 and a moron, spends four years of his life using the abandoned clothes that previously belonged to the children in the uchiha clan as disposable clothing and there’s a landfill in Konoha somewhere just full of black playsuits.
Companion theory “One-Shirt Uzumaki” where naruto owns exactly one (1) set of clothing that he furiously hand washes every night at 1am.

turns out the real villain in naruto was blind loyality to the state all along
naruto wave arc: it’s so tragic that these people were forced into a life of violence to try and overthrow a corrupt system of government and that blind loyalty to his master caused this young man’s death
Naruto, itachi arc: a state that orders children to kill other children is not a state that deserves to survive and any/all means to abolish these military dictatorships is necessary
Naruto, endgame: lol no actually ninja military dictatorships are good and it was all this moon rabbit lady’s fault, let’s not critically examine the way we’re raising twelve year olds to murder each other
asuma is also a teacher at their high school!!! the whole asuma-dies thing w shikamaru in this au is that hidan vandalizes asumas ford fiesta with spray paint and shikamaru tries to kill him for it. sometimes it just be that way
shikamaru works at ikea with temari but all he does is sleep on the beds. he vapes but only the cotton candy flavor. he plays fortnite with naruto and choji. he and kiba get high together but not currently bc kibas mad at him for vaping. shikamaru is basically inos personal assistant bc she’s lost control of her life. sometimes he answers her phone for her and shows up to her house in the middle of the night to tell her to get her shit together.
choji and shikamaru r dating so jot that one down. choji naruto and kiba like to spam the group chat and shikamaru gets mad abt it. he has a butterfly backpack but that’s a given. he works at his parents restaurant and everyone tries to get him to give them discounts but he always says no. he only wears crocs. he shikamaru and kiba play minecraft together but don’t tell naruto abt it bc he sucks at it. he always eats chips specifically in asumas class and crinkles the bag bc he knows it annoys him and he thinks it’s funny.
ino works at a flower/gardening store. she has a huge crush on sakura for years that everybody but sakura knows about. she and sai are mlm/wlw solidarity and bond over crop tops and people who don’t know how to wear makeup. ino knows everything about everyone because she’s just always present. kind of like shisui but you actually see her coming and going. sakura always tries to talk to her about star wars and she doesn’t understand but pretends she does. ino leaves flowers for sakura at home depot when she’s working but sakura just thinks its a friend thing. major f
hes a master of disguise but also he just works everywhere and keeps the uniform if gets fired. hes the fastest delivery guy in the city but sometimes he eats the food or destroys property on accident with his car. so at what cost?
