*wakes up from 2 hour nap in full cosplay at the busport near con im at* do hibari and bakugou have the same obsession for Winning/being the Best? i know there’s probably like 957 flaws in my train of thought but ur the only person i can trust on hibari meta pls help.

micronecro:

Bakugou is more obviously and blatantly a Gokudera situation, though his capacity to like, respect and submit to people straight up does not exist

Hibari doesn’t win the prove anything, he just think this is the natural order of things because he’s an entitled brat. At all times, he is calm, disinterested, and generally pretty bored. Having his absolute reality challenged by actually getting curbstomped just makes him irritable and eager to double-check, because obviously something went wrong the first time. He views “something to strive for” as “you let me become stronger and I’m coming for you” which is his version of comfort because he is absolutely fucking incredible as a character.

Bakugou is a narcissist who believes he’s the best because he wants to be the best, and when that absolute is challenged, he has a cataclysmic meltdown. Even the slightest hint of being considered ‘unworthy’ – Todoroki failing to overcome his trauma once he left the heat of the moment – he flips his goddamn lid. His insecurity is practically choking him to death. He doesn’t just want to be on top, he wants being on top to mean something, especially to people around him.

Hibari doesn’t really…care? About any of that? If you disrespect him he gets mad, if you beat him he gets mad, and while he is extremely reticent to actually admit he values his friends over his pride (or at least respects their pride as much as his own), he’s generally straightforward and doesn’t really care that he has a small army of loyal followers at his beck and call. He is a remarkably un-self-aware person.

Hello, I would just like to ask what the most common writing pitfalls of Hibari Kyouya in fanfics are? I ask this because I want to write him, but I’m afraid of getting the characterization wrong and falling into the pitfalls that are common in writing him and you seem to be very knowledgeable in this area. Sorry if you’re too busy to answer and I’m inconveniencing you.

I’m always up for talking about my fav…

Hibari doesn’t get much screentime and his development is defined by him acting differently almost every time he shows up in ways that make sense after the previous events, so I don’t blame people for getting him wrong.

Except I do. I blame them so much.

I’ll split them into parts because the inaccuracies get so bad that it’s become a necessity:

Word Choices

Hibari uses “herbivore” instead of “coward”. He uses it to clearly delineate between himself (cool, strong, top of the food chain) with everyone else. It’s absolutely meant as an insult.

– Likewise, Hibari does not use “carnivore” or “omnivore”. He says “herbivore” because he’s talking shit.

-I’ll bite you to death is a phrase typically used in 2 situations: when he’s punishing someone for disobedience or when he’s threatening to punish a cowardly student. Because he’s always talking shit and removes himself from most situations where talking shit is unnecessary, it’s okay if you make him say this all the time. I’m sure we only hear it every now and then because how infrequently he shows up.

-Hibari uses “little animal” when he is not talking shit, but still thinks he’s better than them. Even I’m guilty for missing out on this one; when some people Beneath him but ultimately neutral to his sensibilities show up, he considers them little animals. He calls Gokudera and Yamamoto this.

-Hibari’s nicknames are either insults or epithets. See: “King of Monkey Mountain” vs “The Baby” vs “Bucking Horse”.

-Hibari only refers to people he likes and respects by name. I’m pretty sure only Tsuna, Yamamoto, and Kusakabe get this honour (but only because Hibari has very little screen time and rarely talks when he thinks he doesn’t have to – I’m sure a few other characters have this privilege and we just don’t know it).

hello do you mind explaining your “byakuran turned good for yuni” whine because I dont remember that but it’s also been Literal Years since I read KHR.

micronecro:

Byakuran considers Tsuna a bit of an in-joke, but isn’t especially occupied with him.

Yuni, during her Great Sky Sacrifice, used her abilities to locate the Final Byakuran – the version of Byakuran that succeeded in his plans (the universe they’re in is simply the one where breaking the Mare Ring’s power was simply a realistic objective, thanks to Shouichi’s long game), tell him why ruling the universe gave him depression, and welcomed him as someone who supported and fulfilled him.

The effect of the Mare Rings broke, so every timeline in which Byakuran retained future reflections has him fixated on Yuni, who presented herself as someone to base his existence and emotional fulfilment on. As long as Yuni is a good person, Byakuran is one too, if on the chaotic side of things.

Any universe where Byakuran recalls Sawada Tsunayoshi and decides to focus on Sawada Tsunayoshi while showing no interest in Yuni is brazenly OOC.

(Also, it’s been a while since I read KHR too, but I think Byakuran’s impression of Tsuna after the fight is “haha uh-oh” because Tsuna recovered from a snapped neck and killed him with fire, making him weirdly threatening.)
