my davekat explaining, Hussie kinda sucks at romance. (never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.)

odditycollector:

I don’t attribute it to either of those things though!

I believe that, even assuming that they really were dating in his head, it is inconceivable that he did not once ponder the question of either confirming it in the text or leaving things murky.

eta: That is a basic level of storytelling competence that it is really safe to grant the guy, no matter how frustrated we might get about him writing his story Wrong or w/e, because otherwise we would never have gotten this far.

Would you ever write… davekat?

odditycollector:

hahahahahaa

the answer, it may surprise, is I very almost did

it would have been literary analysis essay #4 (or whatever) illustrating the horrifying problematics inherent in hussie smooshing (or whatever) them together caliborn style (spec: by removing the rest of their social circles especially any females and making them act kind of wonky and broken regardless) because that shit still wasn’t an accident

but then i felt mean about it

it may say more about my unending irrational hope that there is more to come, but this (and some old writing on davekat you did a ways back) actually made me think: between davekat and scourge, we don’t have a lot of healthy relationships coming out of the retcon. Scourge was a bit more called out (the lead up to remem8er seemed to point out how screwy that was, and I still remember how much people were calling out how ooc terezi seemed), but it kinda hits DK too.

I went looking for a thing Hussie said once that I vaguely remembered but thought would give Assurances in this matter, except instead I found he had predicted the us election for orange-kind and i’m done.

how does this square with the Word of God that davekat is canon?

Isn’t Word of God that every ship is canon, and every fantroll too?

…Are you talking about the vine going around, or was there something else I missed? Because I thought the vine was funny but obv. not to be taken too seriously? Like, I do not want to spread rumours about people on the internet, but I have heard tell from a buddy who got it from a reliable source that Andrew Hussie is kind of a troll.

If he wanted to clarify one way or the other, he would have done it in the story, in either Dave or Karkat’s dialogue. It can only be open to interpretation because it’s meant to be. So – and this is me talking as someone who likes writing open endings sometimes – speculating on what really happened is fun, but arguing about the One Correct Answer is a trap. One it would be hilarious to watch people fall into.

Unless he revisits this timeline to answer, *all* supported interpretations of their relationship-state are true. And even if he does do that, he still meant it to be an open question *now*!

It is narratively unsatisfying but, borrowing a different physics metaphor, let’s please not have a battle over whether davekat is a wave or a particle.

…..Besides, how many times does the author have to die before it finally sticks?

Yeah I agree with this. But also space/focus concerns could have played a part.

Sure, but the space/focus concerns in question were decided by Andrew Hussie. It is not like some weird accidental oversight occurred here.

Even pretending that Dave’s emotions were not among the biggest late homestuck focus points… If people are looking at the sprawling mass that the story became, even in the last few weeks, and their conclusion is that Hussie fully, definitely INTENDED to clear up the davekat question (in whatever direction), if only he’d had the space to add in a SINGLE EXTRA SENTENCE somewhere…. then I don’t know. I don’t know, man, I don’t know, I just don’t know.

I don’t know.

Here. ok. like. Shit, let’s be Hussie.

Karen AH:
Alas! For my god-like authorial intent
was for Dave and Karkat to be unequivocally human romance dating (or
whatever), but I used up the last of my carefully rationed text
alphabet letters during the part where Dave goes on and on on Jane
Crocker’s sexual attractiveness while Karkat is also present.

Karen AH:
Ah! Ah! Oh! This is most indeed news of a fair terribility, and there is not a thing that might be done to its repair….

Oh right, that’s actually nonsense.

…..I can’t believe I am sitting here doing this again. The exact thing I said I was finished doing. Sigh.

But iirc you were asking about “Word of God” stuff before so here, answering scripture with scripture:

(wow, even davekat????!!!!! congrats, we are a winner!)
