omg I’m doing research for one of projects for college, and apparently, girls learn better when they’re in an all girls class, but boys learn even worse when they’re in an all boys class, because all the negative things become even stronger of there are no girls to act as “buffer”

get rid of the boys and let girl learn in peace, i couldn’t care less about them

It’s not our job to be a “buffer”

Separate boys from girls then, they don’t have to be acting like mothers at age 12, if boys ruin the education of others boys, um, idk, fix their behavior maybe?

I work at uni. My program is very competitive. Like you need a 92% or more to get in. We get 10x the applications than we can accept. So. This means our program is 95% female. Simply because girls do better in highschool than boys. Its literally that simple. However. This is a HUGE deal in the administration! Because OMG all those poor boys with less than a 92% can’t get into our program and woe is me, those poor poor boys. Every year we meet to talk about ways to “rectify” this “problem”. One year they’re going to stop inviting me to these meetings. Because I always ask questions like “how do we get boys into the program with lower GPAs without denying girls with higher GPAs? And how is giving boys preferential treatment not sexist?” Keep going good ladies, I’m saving your seat!

This type of thing always happens when women are dominating something, protocols are changed to accommodate and benefit men, and if this strategy isn’t successful the field is devalued.

Keep the good work!

The amount of times I heard my grandfather talk about the ‘feminization’ of schools because he wanted to blame the system for boys under performing (or, more accurately: girls out performing the boys) instead of, ya know, boys’ entitled attitudes and overall piss poor behavior when at school.

When women fail at something: there must be something wrong with women
When women succeed at something: there must be something wrong with the system

I think I’ve talked about it before on other posts, but I once had an anthropology class that, completely unintentionally, was all women and one man, and he dropped the course after two weeks. The other section of the same anthropology class, taught by the same professor, was mixed with men and women. So, since it was anthropology, she asked if it was cool if she took notes. She said right away that the all female class had a wildly different vibe, that we spoke and acted differently and had different social expectations of her and the rest of the class, and that we let students complete their thoughts before disagreeing, while the mixed class was highly traditional and almost entirely male dominated because every time a woman spoke, a man jumped in halfway through to “correct” her by saying the same thing. Its a very small sample size, but I think about this a lot

So all those “girls shoulders and knees distract boys from learning” policies…..

I hadn’t seen any English reports on this but its too good not to share.

So right now there are pretty crazy right-wing nationalist sexists in Japan. They’re dressing up in WWII military outfits, they’re standing outside of Korean schools (in Japan) shouting that Koreans should be killed, and just generally being horrible human beings. For reasons unknown, the Japanese police haven’t done anything to stop them, and when people get physical with the right-wingers and a fight breaks out, it’s not the right-wing people who get punished.

Enter: the Yakuza.

Yakuza, for those who don’t know, is the name for the world of Japanese gangs, commonly known for being covered in tattoos. A few retired yakuza members (most of whom are notoriously and vocally conservative) got tired of this extreme right wing BS. They believe that picking on people who are weaker than you, like the children at the Korean schools or refugees, is embarrassing, and not something to be proud of. They want these right wingers to man up (the group is almost entirely men) and shut up.

These old retired yakuzas start showing up at the right wing protests and intimidate the hell out of these guys. When they feel like it, they’ll use physical force too. The police don’t mess with the yakuza so these right wing protesters become human punching bags. All their talk of killing Koreans or their superiority to just about everyone flies out the window when these gangsters roll up.

It started with only one or two yakuza who were bored and fed up, but more and more started to come. They started training in boxing and street fighting, and wouldn’t you know it…the number of right wing protesters got less and less.

Then, people of other walks of life joined in too. With the yakuza throwing the police off, professors could join by writing about the issues profusely. Suddenly a ton of otakus joined too, using their art and community to protest. They’d show up in droves and stand behind the muscle (yakuza) and make a ton of noise. They literally staged an “otakus against racists” rally.

Slowly, the protests have seen the right wing attendance drop more and more and I am living for these “manly men” being trashed by retired gangsters and fans of Love Live.

In conclusion:

First, I’d like the extreme right wing to gtfo

Second, I’d like a manga, then an anime, about these yakuza who befriended professors and otakus to fight neo-nazis. K? cool.

Anyway, if the new Harry Potter movie that is set in NEW YORK IN THE 1920s doesn’t have any black people in it (like the trailer suggests) I am legit going to throw my Harry Potter books in the trash and never look back.

I don’t care whose fault it is. The casting directors, the producers, j.k. herself. I don’t care. That level of disrespect, historical revisionism via white supremacist fantasy is not to be tolerated.

The Jazz Age.

With no black people.

The JAZZ AGE.

Do they have ANY idea how creepy it is that every single fantasy is a world without brown people?

That every magical wondrous place they can imagine, a dominant feature is that we have been scrubbed from every corner?

And where did we go? We’re we driven out? Did they kill us all? When one type of person is overwhelmingly missing there is always a reason.

And what reason will small children of color make up in their heads to answer such a question?

What little cloud will enter their mental sky?

@oneknightincamelot I promise I’m not dragging you, but I’m actually not talking about leads, I’m talking about environmental black people. Like black people in the background of that world.

This is what Harlem looked like in the 1920s.

This is what harlem was portrayed as in Fantastic Beasts

And I specifically looked for scenes with concentrated groups of background people.

Its not the starring cast that was “whitewashed” its the ENTIRE ENVIRONMENT that was historically revised. Which is a much more dangerous lie.

Also, this is specific to black people. While I am constantly hungry for more Asian representation and am happy anywhere I see it, Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance was a specifically an area and era infused with black people and black art.

Here is a documentary about it if you’re curious.

Anyway even The Great Gatsby did a better job of quickly portraying our importance and style in the Jazz era, and it wasnt even a movie about black people– it was specifically about rich white people.

Honestly between this and the trash JK created based on Native American culture without actually talking with Native Americans to make sure it wasn’t offensive that will be used in the movie, I have zero interest in seeing it. It’s too white, too misinformed, and they’re putting fucking Johnny Depp, a known abuser in it. I have zero interest in supporting any of that.

That and Eddie seems to be portraying a Hufflepuff stereotype that looks as well written as Bella Swan from Twilight. It’s one thing when it was kids acting, but this guy has been nominated for a million awards and the trailers are just gross.

I prefer what fans wrote for an idea, that Newt is a black man coming to america, faces the shit show of racism compared to England, and goes on amazing adventures. THAT I’d watch.

Newt in a historically accurate Harlem would have approached some of the depth of the original series, because that would provide the opportunities to explore deeper issues of who we consider human and what rights that entails. It would also depict a world that one group creates and calls home, with one group visiting– sometimes for entertainment, sometimes for gain, sometimes for violence– which could describe 1920s Harlem or the fictional wizarding community in Harry Potter. It would look less like a lazy cash grab at any rate.

^^^^^

What the fuck, that’s supposed to be fucking HARLEM?????

Forget not doing research, I’m convinced they did negative research. As in they Obliviated any and all memory of historical reference from their minds.

Holy shit. I didn’t want to see this movie and now I’m actively angry about it. Harlem in the 20s WAS blackness. It just… like…

FUCK JK Rowling, fuck the people who made this movie, and fuck every person in it. Honestly just fuck Hollywood in general. You are going BACKWARDS in representation, just like our fucking government.

Stuff like this is why people are convinced that every past era in the Western World was all white. Media. Colonial times, Medieval times, the Old West, World Wars I and III, the ‘50s… all of it presented as all white eras in popular fiction, and people are more than happy to accept it that way.

One can argue that an American suburb in the ‘50s really was all white (hell plenty of them still are), but Harlem in the ‘20s? It’s honestly seriously damaging and inexcusable.

The only Fantastic Beasts post that matters….

my grandparents lived in Harlem, at that time.

my mother was born and grew up there.

i couldnt even, in the late 90′s/early 00′s get my white friends to GO there for ANY reason.

why are they gentrifying Harlem’s past ????

erasure. thats why. it doesnt matter what we feel like now , to white supremacy, what matters is future kids and folks will have to do digging to find out the TRUTH. otherwise, they’ll believe its white.

movies have lasting white washing legacy’s, a good example is : Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor.

posting to share the great work these black women are doing. NOT to start some stupid ass “black men vs black women” argument. keep that bullshit to yourself coon.

read this great story here

I’m working in my city to register voters and engage with folks who just don’t believe their vote counts. The energy of the black women who are my comrades, be they teens or great grandmothers, is inspiring. They are the foot soldiers in the struggle for justice. There’s nothing like watching a 80-yr-old woman walk into a room on two canes to spend the afternoon phone banking.

These women, and others working for the same goal, deserve so much for their help. If you are 18 or older and live in the US and haven’t registered to vote yet, this is your reminder!

Republicans: Felons should NEVER regain the right to vote. Got a felony for pot possession when you were 21? Fuck off. If you can’t follow the law, you don’t get to vote on the law.

Also Republicans: I mean, even if Kavanaugh IS an attempted rapist who drank underage in high school, whatever. It’s not disqualifying even if its true. I still think he should serve a LIFETIME POSITION ON THE SUPREME COURT.

Not only that, but he perjured himself 3 separate times in front of the Senate, first during his confirmation when Bush nominated him to the DC court, again during his SCOTUS hearing, and then again this past week.

Perjury is, wait for it, a felony.

hold on a second, why does this say ‘REGAIN right to vote’? Are prisoners in USA not allowed to vote???

Yeah in a lot of places in the USA any felony charge loses you the right to vote. It’s called felony disenfranchisement

… Wouldn’t that allow government to strip opposition activists of political rights by arresting them on manufactured charges? That sounds EXTREMELY undemocratic and easily exploitable.

You are correct.

Some people are commenting by saying that when an employee is fired, it’s because the employee did something wrong.

But the same is true when someone quits. Usually an employee quits because their boss did something wrong. For example, if the boss doesn’t pay a living wage, then the boss has been doing something wrong for literally every second that the employee was there.

That 2017 #look

On the other side of the dressy scale there was a 7 months pregnant lawyer sitting on the floor at IAD

At O’Hare there was a lawyer who was about five minutes away from giving birth sitting there in her sweatpants with a sign that said “I’m a lawyer and I speak Hindi/Urdu”. Just her and her sign and supersized tea from McDonalds.

I’ll say it again. MOSTLY WOMEN.

Why does their being mostly women matter?

Because, statistically speaking, 64% of lawyers in the United States are men, meaning that the majority of the demographic showing up should reflect this.
It is also interesting to note that only 27% of American born lawyers are female- that means that a lot of these women are likely immigrants or foreign born.
We have a majority of women showing up in a field where they are a minority; women who dropped everything to help defend human rights and the country.
There’s no cis-male equivalency to pregnancy, but if you fail to see the importance and stength of a woman who might feasibly go into labour at any second still standing up for what is right and good whilst the majority of politicians are cowering, then I can’t help you.

Why most of the lawyers you see battling Trump’s immigration order are women

“I have been working non-stop for three
days and I have not made a penny,” [said a female lawyer who had been at a Texas airport and asked not to be quoted by name]. A friend, who is a male
immigration lawyer, went on vacation over the weekend, she said, because
he felt it wouldn’t be lucrative. “Male immigration lawyers look at
this and say ‘This is not a business opportunity for me,’” she said.
