Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is celebrated in
Japan. In 1967, King wrote to Japan
saying he hoped to visit and bridge the
gap between East and West with ‘good
will and brotherhood’ from the US.
Today, the city of Hiroshima celebrates
their young on MLK Day to teach the
importance of electoral politics and
non-violent social change. Source Source 2 Source 3

Reflecting on his youth, Pablo Picasso
once said: “When I was a child, my
mother said to me, ‘If you become a
soldier, you’ll be a general. If you
become a monk you’ll end up as the
pope.’ Instead, I became a painter
and wound up as Picasso.” Source Source 2

There’s a statue in Poland that turns into Darth Vader when it snows.

The statue is actually a dedication to the town’s founder, Jakub Wejher, who died in a mining accident almost 400 years ago.

The scientists who first discovered
the platypus thought it was fake.
Although indigenous Aboriginal
people already knew of the creature,
European scientists assumed an
egg-laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed,
otter-footed, venomous mammal had
to be an elaborate hoax. Source Source 2

Baby elephants suck on their trunks for
comfort, just like human babies suck
their thumbs. Adult elephants do it, too.
Trunk-sucking is most common in the
young, but even old bulls suck their
trunks when they feel nervous or unsure. Source Source 2

Rap battles have been around since
the 5th century. ‘Flyting’ was a ritual
where two people competed by
exchanging insults in poetic verse,
much like modern, freestyle battles
between rappers. The insults were
often provocative, and people accused
each other of cowardice and
sexual perversion. Source Source 2 Source 3

There were real life ‘Hobbit people’
living on an Indonesian island 18,000
years ago. Fully-grown adults were
only about 3 feet tall. Studies show
they were likely a result of insular
dwarfism, where species trapped on
an island shrink in size. The same
island was also once inhabited by
miniature elephants. Source Source 2
