People always get on Barold’s case for begging Taako to kill him when he could have just jumped off the ship, but consider this: he already forgot about the Starblaster. Which tracks, since part of Merle’s forgetting process was being confused about the ship.
Barry literally didn’t remember that he was on the ship where he’d lived for 100 years, but he still remembered Taako and Lup, because he’s a good good loving boy.
