Experimenting with a new style/shading method, among other things. Not sure I like the shading, but this is one of the first pieces in memory I’ve liked better finished than as a sketch.
And also having the Black Family invade my brain. Because they are largely terrible, terrible, fascinating people. And they may be how I start writing again.
This is not one of the terrible ones. This is Marius, Phineas Nigellus’s grandson and the Black Family Squib (not that the Blacks only produced one Sqiub, but he’s the one on the 150 years of Black Family Tree we’ve got). And his cat – I really like the idea that cat/kneazle hybrids can function as a sort of magical seeing eye dog for Squibs, even though it’s not Rowling’s canon, hence Isla’s appearance here.
Still debating some of the character points if I’m actually going to write him, except for the Black’s tendency to produce geniuses who are a few cards short of a full deck. Still debating when he left home, for that matter – I have a feeling it was around 11, just because I can’t see the Black family keeping him around, but eeeeeeh. He’d have turned 11 around 1927-1929, to judge from birth order, so it’s possible.
And seriously, if you have concrit, pleease.
