Has the manga explained what Todoroki Rei’s diagnosis is?
In the absence of a diagnosis I’m seeing a bad possibility and a worse possibility.
Bad possibility: She’s committed herself because she has no money of her own and nowhere to go but back to Endeavor’s house. No one has provided her with other options. (Natsuo? Is he too broke, or she thinks she’d be a burden? Her parents? Do they care about her even a little?)
Worse possibility: Endeavor has had her involuntarily committed to try to keep the whole mess under wraps. She’s embarrassing. Rei probably could be found competent looking at the actual facts, but lawyers and confrontation would be involved, and she just can’t.
…Other possibility: This is actually normal for the mental health care system in Japan, which I know nothing about.
She had a short-term… whatever. Psychotic break, dissociative episode, I don’t know what it would be called. Hospitalized overnight, definitely. Hospitalized until all the legal fallout of injuring the child is worked through, justifiable. But – in the absence of some additional diagnosis – I don’t see actual treatment taking more than a year. Tops. Less if she had somewhere else to go.
And if Endeavor was worried about preventing another attack, all he’d have to do is divorce her.
And if the Worse Possibility is the case… ffs, Endeavor, if you want to make amends, you don’t send flowers, you stop falsely imprisoning her.
If Rei doesn’t have a proper diagnosis and reason for continued hospitalization, the whole Endeavor redemption thing goes from “not to everyone’s taste what with the whole reconciliation with an abuser” to “asking us to believe he is a good guy while he is actively doing something morally reprehensible”.
