… I thought that it was plainly stated that the Philosophers Stone was moved to Hogwarts because there was a plan to steal it from Gringotts and therefore had to moved to the most protected location in the magical world … which is Hogwarts. Harry linking the Gringotts robbery and the Stone was a big plot point so how did you conclude that it had anything to do with Dumbledore trying to get Harry killed before he turned 12?

First of all, up front: I don’t think Dumbledore brought the Stone to Hogwarts specifically to test Harry.  In fact, part of why I’m so sure it’s a test for Voldemort is because setting the whole situation up as a test for Harry in the first place makes so little sense.  It definitely did become a test for Harry, (but more on that later).

So to me, understanding what’s going on in this situation rests on three questions.

  • Why did the stone have to be moved right then, at the same moment Harry was starting Hogwarts, ten years after Voldemort’s defeat?
  • Why bring it to Hogwarts specifically?
  • Why hide it behind the series of obstacles that were chosen to guard it?
