When push comes to shove, Eri consistently puts the safety and lives of other before her own, this is a character trait that both makes me proud and sob.

Back when we first met her, Eri saw Overhaul reach for his glove and jumped out of Izuku’s grip, without any hesitation or second thoughts, because she knew if she didn’t he would kill the people that tried to save her.

And now in chapter 150, when Overhaul speaks on her behalf and says that Mirio “is no hero” to her, she looks at Mirio blankly, as if to confirm this. But, when Mirio manages to grab her, the facade breaks and she yells at him to leave or he’ll die, nearly crying because she doesn’t want this person to get hurt for her sake, even if it means she must continue to suffer under that Bird Faced Bastard and his plans.

On the surface, this is quite brave, and it is…but I think there’s a darker reason for this. Overhaul has, not once, expressed concern for Eri’s happiness or emotional well being. He has “keepers” watch over her, tells them to buy her toys so she’ll stay in line and not cause trouble. Hell, we’ve never even seen him touch her, at least in anyway that doesn’t involve his quirk.

Everytime Eri and him share a page, he keeps his distance, cold and unfeeling, speaking to her only when trying to play to her fears. When he comes back to the hideout after getting her back, he kills her previous keeper, and then tells her to stop being selfish, and keep doing as he says, and not make him have to “dirty [his] hands anymore.” 

He puts the blame for that man’s death solely on her and he doesn’t even look at her when he says it!

Overhaul probably only cares about Eri’s quirk, and he probably tells her about how important she is to his plans, but there is no emotion there, no affection or compassion for a person he has the gull to call his “daughter.”

Eri has probably tried to escape before, the way Overhole talks about her attempt in 129 implies as much, and every time she has, someone dies, and he blames it on her for trying to escape. This crushes her every time, makes her obedient for a while until she gathers enough courage to try again when she can’t take any more pain and suffering…only to again fail when he catches her, and puts the head of another person and her shoulders.

And then she runs into someone, someone who is able and willing to save her, she clings to him with all her might because he holds her with care, with compassion and gentleness she has never been treated with before, and she thinks that this time, this time she might actually make it out…

…and then Overhaul starts taking off his gloves.

All of a sudden, all her will to escape vanishes into thin air, and all she can think about is stopping him before someone else loses their life for her.

She comes back with him without a fuss…and despite doing as he says…someone dies anyway, and once again she is to blame.

By the time Mirio gets to her, she is convinced she will never escape, that any attempt will only end with someone dying for her sake, and the thought of that terrifies her.

Eri has suffered so much and watched so many people die “because of her” that she is willing to sacrifice her own happiness and well being so long as other people stay safe.
