Mini-Theory: Quirkless Genocide

Let’s talk about Destro.

It seems like people are sleeping on the Destro subplot due to everything going on with Endeavor and Hawks. But I’ve noticed something that may or may not be as subtle as I think, and I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed it.

We can conclude that this “Metahuman Liberation Army” was formed when people who had quirks were discriminated against and scorned, so it was probably a protest to the majority. From what we can tell about Hazukashi, it probably has to do with being proud of your quirk no matter how useless or minor, because it’s a part of who you are. There’s no reason to hide it even if you can pass as quirkless.

But what’s confusing about this is how it’s a problem.

Gentle talks about how Destro was an infamous villain, even putting him on par with All for One. If history is written by the winners, then why would someone who fought for the acceptance of quirks be labeled as a villain or a “problem”? Wouldn’t modern day society idolize him as a hero, like a Founding Father or a warrior for civil rights?

And there’s another point I’d like to make: although it can be argued that quirk inheritance could make quirks more common (like, if someone quirkless had a child with someone who has a quirk, their child would probably have a quirk), there’s also the societal unacceptance during this time period. Quirkless people hated and feared those who had quirks, and (romantic) interactions with the quirkies were probably condemned.

So how in the world did people with quirks become the majority?

The manga mentions something similar, but the anime itself talks about a shrinkage of population since the time the Olympics were still popular. At first I thought that maybe sickness wiped out a portion of the population, or maybe a catastrophic event occurred. But maybe it’s darker than that.

It’s possible that this “Metahuman Liberation Army” became increasingly violent over the course of the discrimination they faced. They probably fought with quirkless people for several years, but with the power they have in comparison to to the quirkless, they could have exercised their own type of “justice” on those who made their lives miserable.

And it doesn’t help that “Destro” is only a single letter away from “Destroy,” and we know how much names mean in BNHA. If his freedom fighting grew more and more violent, the army could have become more of a terrorist group than a peaceful protest. Radical ideas such as this even pose a threat to modern day society.

But again, just a theory. There’s no concrete evidence but I think it’s very possible.
