“But Regulus was a racist!” I’ve this argument a few times and I have a few problems with it.
1. The person making this argument seems to completely over look the fact that Regulus willingly sacrificed his own life to try and bring Voldemort down, Voldemort who cared so little for of the lives of Muggles and Muggleborns that he wouldn’t hesitate to kill them. Regulus died to stop him and he’s the racist? Sure, Regulus might have believed as in such things at one point, but the fact that he gave his life in such a manner shows that he had a change of heart. If you can’t forgive him for that, I have nothing to say to you.
2. This argument is usually brought up when someone is comparing Regulus and Snape. Which I find laughable. Regulus was a racist, but Snape wasn’t? He called the girl he loved “Mudblood!” He joined the Death Eaters and only changed his mind when said girl was targeted, unlike Regulus who saw what Voldemort was doing was wrong.
3. We don’t know for sure that Regulus was racist. Hear me out on this. Unlike Snape, we never actually see Regulus. We never get to judge him for ourselves. We only ever hear about him from other characters. So there’s a lot that’s open to interpretation. How do we know Regulus wasn’t just some scared kid who was too terrified of his parents to cross them? How do we know he didn’t fall under the pressure to make his parents proud of him? The truth is, we don’t! Unless Rowling comes out will a book about him, Regulus’ character and actions can be interpreted in a number of different ways. So don’t hate on the character or other people’s interpretations of him.
