This is the best song Zach’s had to date, finally displacing Be Wherever You Are as my favorite Zach song.
This is something Greg and Pearl both need–they’re both hurting, in agony from the loss of the greatest love of their lives, and they’re unable to talk to the one person in the world who understands better than anybody what they’re going through.
Steven apparently brought Pearl along deliberately hoping they’d finally hash things out, and I can’t blame him–these two needed closure. Pearl’s hurt bubbles near the surface, but Greg’s hides deep, and they both need to get it out, get it to a place where they can deal with it.
Note that I didn’t say get over it.
They never will.
You don’t get over the True Love of your life dying–not even when you’re a fleshy, short-lived ape with imperfect memory, let alone an ancient immortal AI time abyss like Pearl. You never do, but you can move on, can find peace and closure to take away the edge. Greg needs to deal with her loss, and the way he thinks Pearl resents him–but it’s not him she’s most resentful of.
It’s Rose.
Pearl’s telling the truth; she always thought of Greg as one more interchangeable lover, one more meaningless ape-thing that would soon leave their lives, until suddenly he wasn’t. But she doesn’t blame him on more than a surface level; the betrayal runs all the way to her core, to Rose, to her love, to how Rose chose to die for her love–and her love wasn’t for Pearl.
But…it’s over, isn’t it?
It’s time we all moved on.
one of my favorite things about this show is that greg and pearl love steven utterly… but neither of them have any idea why rose died to make him. greg is an artist, a musician, his work is already his legacy; it’s obvious that he’d have been totally fine with the adoption of a completely unrelated human or gem child. and pearl already was a willing and supportive older sister to amethyst, the baby of the group at that time; if rose quartz had picked up a human baby to raise, i really think pearl would have been game.
so why rose specifically spent her life on the creation of a hybrid kid with this latest human lover is the center mystery of the show, and it clearly haunts steven himself more with every season: why did rose die for him? what for? how is he supposed to be worth it?
